Relaxation Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction - ED

Relaxation Therapy for Erectile Dysfunction - ED  Relaxation therapy may be helpful for some men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Relaxation therapy is a technique designed to release both physical and mental tensions. Relaxation techniques are based on the strong effect the mind has on the body. Deep relaxation involves inducing physiological changes such as decreases in heart rate, respiration rate, blood pressure, skeletal muscle tension, metabolic rate, and oxygen consumption. Relaxation techniques include correct abdominal breathing, appropriate muscle relaxation techniques and meditation.  Abdominal, diaphragmatic or stomach breathing helps maintain the focus on breathing without any other distracting thoughts coming to mind. When breathing in, the stomach pushes forward, and when breathing out, the stomach moves back in. Most adults breathe using the chest, so the stomach remains flat. Taking deep breaths a steady rhythm should be maintained, with the same depth of breath each time. Once this breathing has become comfortable, the breathing rate should be slowed by taking a short pause after each exhalation before the next inhalation. Practicing diaphragmatic breathing techniques regularly may result in a relaxed feeling.  Progressive muscle relaxation is designed as a technique for achieving a state of relaxation. Tensing a muscle and holding it for a few seconds, then releasing that tension may produce a sense of relaxation. This strategy allows the body to decrease excess tension. One at a time, each of the major muscle groups should be tensed, held and suddenly relaxed. Time to relax between muscle group tensing may allow awareness of the contrast between the feeling of relaxation and tension. Quiet, gentle music in the background may also prove helpful.  When deep relaxation techniques are practiced regularly, a general feeling of relaxation and well-being may develop that can benefit sexual health. More research is needed.
